Cool Facts

  • Temperatures can reach as high as 50 degrees Celsius in the lowest cave of the three
  • The humidex can almost reach 100 percent and is on average 90 percent, meaning that it can         feel like it is up to 105 degrees Celsius
  • Discovered in 2000 by two miners that worked in the silver and lead mines located in Naica
  • The very next day a metal door was put up to seal the area off so people would not enter
  •       So people would not enter and hurt themselves
  •       So people would not attempt to steal the minerals inside the cave
  • The cave is located 300 meters below the surface of the earth (not very far compared to deepest mines)
  • The largest crystals(found in the lowest regions of the cave) have been found up to 11 meters          long, and weigh in at about 55 tons (55 tonnes is the same as eleven mid sized elephant)
  • In regular clothing the average human can last 15 minutes, after that point most will die
  • In the special suit with cooling packs inside you can only stay inside for 45 minutes
  • The two upper caves are open to the public, when prior contact is made to the correct people
  • The lowest cave that contains the largest crystals is only open to miners and scientist or                    anyone else who is a pre-authorized member
  • The people let in the lowest cave need better gear for survival and are                                                   mainly there for research purposes because of how unique the cave is
